URGENT UPDATE: Koonawarra is set to transform as Inspire Church proposes a new childcare centre atop its church building. The development application was just submitted to the Wollongong City Council and is currently open for public exhibition until August 1.
This innovative project aims to demolish the existing structures on Kurrawa Crescent to construct a two-storey facility featuring a church hall and a childcare centre. The ground floor will serve as a community hub for church services, a soup kitchen, and various group meetings, while the first floor will accommodate a childcare centre with capacity for 53 children. The proposed breakdown includes eight infants aged 0-2 years, 15 toddlers aged 2-3 years, and 30 children aged 3-5 years.
The childcare centre is set to operate only on weekdays, ensuring that the church hall remains available for evening activities after 7 PM and on weekends, minimizing overlap between the two uses. According to the development application, this dual-purpose facility aims to enhance community services while respecting the surrounding residential area.
In a statement regarding the project, officials noted, “Despite the site’s R2 – Low Density Residential Zoning, the site has a history of accommodating non-residential land use.” They emphasize that the new structure will be designed to complement the existing character of Goondah Avenue and Kurrawa Crescent.
Furthermore, all play areas for the childcare centre will be strategically located away from residential properties, positioned along the southern and eastern boundaries. This thoughtful planning aims to mitigate noise and disruption for nearby residents.
The application also highlights the pressing need for additional childcare spaces in the area, stating that the development will “play a positive role in increasing valuable childcare places and places of worship within Koonawarra.”
As this proposal moves forward, community members and stakeholders are encouraged to engage with the public exhibition process and voice their opinions. With the deadline for feedback approaching on August 1, this project is poised to significantly impact the local community.
