la-trobe-unveils-62-million-student-high-rise-plans-in-cbd

UPDATE: La Trobe University has just announced a bold new plan for a $62 million student accommodation high-rise in the heart of Bendigo’s city center. The proposed building, located at 57-63 Williamson Street, will rise a striking seven storeys and is set to provide 220 beds for students, replacing the existing Bolton’s business, which is relocating.

The high-rise will feature a ground floor dedicated to retail and dining, alongside six floors of student accommodation. Developers confirmed that while the primary purpose of the building is student housing, some rooms will also be available for short-stay rentals during peak periods. This initiative aims to cater to families of students, visiting academics, and guests attending sports tournaments.

La Trobe emphasizes that the mixed-use development will be commercially viable, preventing the building from being underutilized throughout the year. The structure is designed to house 196 units, comprising 183 one-bedroom units, eight four-bedroom units, and five accessible one-bedroom units. Additional amenities will include dedicated study areas, laundry facilities, and 55 bicycle parking spaces.

Officials assert that this project aligns with community needs, given its proximity to vital amenities, services, and public transport. The building will reach approximately 23 meters in height, comparable to other recent developments like the GovHub and Bendigo Law Courts.

Developers state, “The proposal has been designed with safety, inclusivity, and wellbeing in mind, promoting student interaction and a sense of community.” The design process took into account feedback from student surveys across La Trobe’s existing campuses.

The plans have been submitted to the City of Greater Bendigo, which is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. As this project unfolds, it represents a significant step in enhancing Bendigo’s urban landscape and meeting the growing demand for student accommodation.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as La Trobe University aims to reshape the future of student living in Bendigo.
