URGENT UPDATE: Support for the Labor Party has surged as the Coalition faces a significant decline, according to the latest Newspoll results. This critical survey, released by The Australian, reveals that Labor’s primary vote has increased by 1.4 percentage points since the May election, reaching 36%, while the Coalition has tumbled from 31.8% to just 29%.
This dramatic shift marks the Coalition’s lowest primary vote in a Newspoll since November 1985. The combined primary vote for Labor and the Coalition stands at 65%, the lowest recorded in Newspoll history. The urgency of these findings cannot be overstated as they reflect changing sentiments among voters just days before the official opening of the 48th Parliament in Canberra on July 18, 2023.
In a two-party-preferred comparison, Labor has widened its lead, now commanding 57% against the Coalition’s 43%, a significant increase from 55.2% to 44.8% since May 3. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has seen his net approval rating improve from -10 to a neutral 0, with 47% of voters satisfied with his performance.
The new Coalition leader, Sussan Ley, has a net approval rating of -7, an improvement over her predecessor Peter Dutton, who registered a troubling -24. However, 23% of respondents believe it is too early to assess Ley’s effectiveness as leader.
The survey was conducted online from July 14 to July 17, capturing the sentiments of 1,264 voters. As Governor-General Sam Mostyn welcomed MPs and senators at Government House on Sunday, the stakes have never been higher for both parties as Labor prepares to take its increased majority into the new term, holding 94 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives.
These developments signal a major realignment in Australian politics, with Labor enjoying a robust lead while the Coalition grapples with diminishing support. As the Parliament officially opens tomorrow, attention will now turn to how both parties respond to these shifting dynamics and the implications for future policies and governance.
