UPDATE: A devastating series of landslides, lightning strikes, and flooding in Nepal have resulted in at least 44 fatalities and 5 individuals missing, according to officials. The catastrophe struck the eastern mountain district of Illam, where entire villages were swept away by relentless rainfall that began on September 29, 2023.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 37 deaths occurred in Illam alone, highlighting the tragedy of a family of six who perished when a landslide obliterated their home while they slept. Local administrator Bholanath Guragai confirmed the heartbreaking loss, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as rain continues to hinder rescue operations.
Authorities are racing against time as heavy rainfall persists, blocking roads and complicating evacuation efforts. Helicopters have been deployed for medical emergencies, while ground troops are assisting in relocating affected residents to safer areas. Tragically, an additional death was reported from a landslide in a neighboring district, alongside three fatalities from lightning strikes and three more from flooding in southern Nepal.
The government has issued a severe rainfall warning for the eastern and central regions, effective from September 30 to October 2, 2023. Major highways have been closed, and domestic flights were grounded on Saturday, reopening only on Sunday. As people return to Kathmandu after celebrating the Dashain festival, highways are congested with vehicles, causing delays as the government assesses the damage.
Despite some flooding in Kathmandu, no major casualties were reported in the capital. To address the crisis, the government declared a public holiday until Monday, allowing officials to focus on rescue and recovery efforts.
Neighboring India has offered support, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing condolences on social media. He stated, “The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal are distressing. We stand with the people and Government of Nepal in this difficult time, committed to providing any assistance that may be required.”
The recent downpour follows a challenging monsoon season that typically runs from June to mid-September. Last year, similar flooding and landslides resulted in the tragic loss of 224 lives and left 158 injured. The ongoing situation in Nepal demands immediate attention as rescue efforts continue amidst deteriorating weather conditions.
