UPDATE: Lavington Panthers secured a commanding victory over Yarrawonga on Saturday, with Aidan Cook stepping up in a pivotal role during a 15.8 (98) to 6.3 (39) win in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League. With regular ruckman Jack Driscoll rested, Cook delivered a five-star performance that thrilled fans and showcased his versatility on the field.
Coach Adam Schneider praised Cook’s outstanding play, noting, “Jack has carried a big load and had a strong year, but Aidan Cook was very good.” Traditionally a backup, Cook’s impressive skills in the ruck were key to Lavington’s victory, especially as the team faced a gritty Yarrawonga squad that kept the match competitive.
The Panthers entered the match as strong favorites, but at halftime, they led by only two points. “It was a scrappy first half, good second half,” Schneider commented. “It was slippery conditions, and ‘Yarra’ played some good footy, but we managed to play our style in the second half with a really good third quarter.”
The turning point came in the third term when Lavington exploded offensively, scoring 7.0 while restricting Yarrawonga to just 0.1. This powerful performance propelled them to a decisive victory and solidified their standing in the league.
Key contributors included Shaun Driscoll and Darcy Smith, each netting three goals, while Jack Costello and Jack Glanvill added two goals each. Cook, along with Ed Perryman, Jono Spina, and Billy Glanvill, played crucial roles in the team’s success.
On the opposing side, Yarrawonga’s efforts were led by Nick Fothergill and Ben Kennedy, who each scored two goals. Despite the loss, Fothergill, Nick Irvine, and Zac Fraser were highlighted as standout performers in a tough match.
As Lavington celebrates this significant win, all eyes will be on the next match, where Cook will likely continue to shine in his expanded role. Fans are eager to see if the Panthers can maintain their momentum in upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League as the season progresses.
