UPDATE: Leeton reflects on a momentous year as 2025 draws to a close, showcasing inspiring stories of community triumphs and heartfelt tributes. From the grand opening of the new Leeton Golf Club clubhouse to poignant farewells, this year has been filled with emotional highs and lows.
In October, the Leeton Golf Club celebrated the grand opening of its stunning new clubhouse, marking a significant milestone after nearly facing closure in 2013. Club president John Martin expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s pretty amazing that we’ve reached this stage … It was a result of the public support for the retention of the golf course.” The community came together to commemorate this achievement, underscoring the resilience and dedication of local supporters.
In July, Nathan Langridge announced his ambitious goal of running across the Nullarbor to raise $100,000 for the mental health organization Beyond Blue. With a journey spanning over 4,000 kilometers, Langridge emphasized, “I’m not wanting to break any records, I’m not a professional athlete. I just like running.” His endeavor, set to kick off in September, has captured the hearts of many in Leeton, who are rallying behind him.
A highlight of the year came from the dynamic husband-and-wife duo, Scott and Rebecca Rowlings, who actively preserve traditional crafts at Mon Repos Narrandera. Their commitment to keeping skills like woodworking and blacksmithing alive resonates deeply in a community that cherishes its heritage. Mr. Rowlings poignantly noted, “Every town used to have a butcher, a baker, and a candlestick maker… we need to keep those skills alive.”
The community also mourned the loss of Rosemary Orr, who passed away on August 26, 2025. Known for her 13 years of dedicated service at Kurrajong Narrandera, Orr’s legacy of warmth and community engagement was celebrated by many who turned out to pay their respects. Her daughter, Lauren, remarked, “Her warmth and dedication will be sorely missed by family, friends, and all those who knew her.”
Additionally, Lucy Gilmour, Leeton’s rising star in para-athletics, made headlines with her remarkable performance at the School Sport Australia Cross-Country Championships. Gilmour clinched gold in her individual event and contributed to the NSW team’s victory. “I always have my mum or nan next to me talking me through it,” she shared, highlighting the importance of family support in her success.
As Leeton moves into 2026, these stories reflect the strength and unity of a community that has faced challenges with resilience and heart. Residents are encouraged to continue supporting local initiatives and to stay connected with ongoing developments.
