URGENT UPDATE: A Leeton mother, Jemima Heath, is spearheading a vital campaign to enhance playground facilities for toddlers and preschoolers at Mountford Park. As a newly appointed 2026 SunRice Ambassador, Heath aims to raise between $25,000 and $30,000 for this essential community project.
In a remarkable turn of events, Heath, who initially did not plan to run for the ambassador position, realized the pressing need for better play equipment after noticing the lack of facilities suitable for young children in Leeton. “This isn’t about fixing something broken; it’s about recognizing that Leeton has so many young families,” she stated passionately.
Heath launched a petition that quickly garnered hundreds of signatures from local residents, demonstrating overwhelming support for the initiative. “Me and some mum friends often drive to Narrandera for their playground that suits that age range. If the Council invests in it, it will create a space that people want to visit,” she added.
To fundraise, Heath is organizing a series of community events, including trivia nights, raffles, and barefoot bowls. “I came up with the ideas. I work in event management, so coordinating isn’t too difficult. I just thought about the community—we’re a small town, and people often wish there was more to do,” she explained.
Funds raised through these events will be allocated to various local causes, with 50% directed to a communally decided initiative and 40% going to Leeton Rotary Central. Only 10% will directly fund the playground upgrades. Fortunately, Leeton Rotary Central has committed to reinvesting their share back into Mountford Park.
Heath acknowledged the high costs associated with playground equipment, stating, “Even small pieces of equipment are very expensive if you look at the catalogues of commercial play equipment.” Despite the daunting financial goal, she remains determined. “Any dollar counts; I won’t be sad if we don’t quite get it,” she asserted.
Support for the campaign is growing, with backing from local organizations, including the Leeton and District Bowling Club. Donations can be made through mycause.com.au or by contacting Heath directly at 0457 547 973.
This initiative is not just about upgrading a playground; it’s about creating a safe space for families in Leeton. With the campaign gaining momentum, community members are encouraged to participate and contribute, ensuring that the town’s youngest residents have a space designed just for them.
