BREAKING: South Morang has named Matthew Penn as the new head coach of the Lions for the upcoming Northern Football League Division 2 season, following the abrupt resignation of Gary Hall. The announcement was made on Sunday, marking a significant shift for the club.

The Lions confirmed that Penn, who previously served as a senior assistant coach at Hurstbridge and has a rich playing history, will take the reins after Hall stepped down after an impressive nine years at the helm. Hall’s tenure saw the team clinch two premierships and achieve promotion from Division 3 to Division 1.

“We would like to thank Gary for his outstanding contribution to SMFNC over the past nine years in the role,” the club stated on social media.

Matthew Penn brings considerable experience to the role, having worked in development and senior assistant capacities at various clubs, including a notable stint at Bundoora from 2013 to 2015. His playing resume includes captaincy of the Northern Knights during their 1996 premiership victory.

This change comes on the heels of a challenging season for the Lions, who struggled in Division 1, finishing with a dismal 2-15 record and ultimately facing relegation back to Division 2. The team aims to rebuild and regain its competitive edge under Penn’s leadership.

Hall’s departure signifies the end of an era for the Lions, who achieved their first-ever Division 2 premiership last year, marking their return to the top flight for the first time since 1980. The club expressed gratitude for Hall’s dedication, stating, “We are grateful for the passion, energy and development that saw the club achieve promotion.”

As the Lions prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Penn to see how he revitalizes the team and leads them back to success in Division 2. Fans and players alike are eager for the new chapter to unfold.
