UPDATE: The Paddock Project in Mullumbimby has become a beacon of hope and inclusion, rapidly expanding its employment programs to support individuals with disabilities. Founded by Karen Gross, who spent over 17 years in special education, the initiative has grown from 2 to 45 employees in just five years, transforming the local community.
Just announced, the social enterprise aims to bridge the employment gap for people with disabilities, providing hands-on opportunities in organic farming, food production, and more. Speaking on the Her Brave Story podcast, Gross highlighted the stark challenges faced by many once they leave school, stating, “It is about providing an opportunity for local people with disabilities to find meaningful employment.”
The Paddock Project thrives on a foundation of organic farming, utilizing a unique syntropic garden designed by agroforestry expert Rodrigo. This innovative farming method promotes biodiversity while delivering fresh, seasonal produce directly to the community, with zero food miles. “We can harvest vegetables, fruit, and flowers for you,” Gross confirmed, showcasing current crops like cassava and silverbeet.
The project operates daily, offering breakfast and lunch from 7 AM to 3 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays. The café features dishes made from ingredients sourced on-site, fostering a farm-to-table experience that resonates with local patrons. The Paddock also invites community engagement through various activities, including Rainbow Family Yoga on Mondays and a weekly program for toddlers, Little Paddock People, every Wednesday morning.
In addition to its café, The Paddock hosts a range of events, including a bi-monthly garage sale and local vendor markets featuring fresh fish from Tara’s van every Thursday. The space is open for rentals, making it versatile for activities like yoga and art classes.
“This is a creative community where people get excited about connecting with nature,” Gross stated, emphasizing the project’s welcoming atmosphere. With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, The Paddock Project remains dedicated to empowering individuals and fostering community ties.
As this dynamic initiative continues to grow, residents are encouraged to support local employment efforts while enjoying the bounty of fresh, organic produce. For those interested in volunteering or participating in community events, The Paddock Project offers a vibrant hub for connection and creativity.
