A food relief service in Noble Park is grappling with rising fuel prices that are impacting its operations and the community it serves. As of March 15, 2024, local unleaded petrol prices reached as high as $2.55 per litre, while diesel exceeded $2.70 per litre. This increase in fuel costs complicates the logistics of providing food at the Noble Park Community Centre (NPCC), which operates each Friday morning.
Grissel Walmaggia, the manager of NPCC, highlighted that rising fuel prices affect the entire supply chain. “When fuel costs increase, it affects the entire supply chain,” Walmaggia stated. “For a small charity like ours, that can mean higher transport costs, fewer donated pickups, and sometimes reduced availability of certain items.”
The NPCC serves a growing number of individuals, distributing 150 free bags of groceries each week. With households facing increased fuel expenses, many are left with less disposable income for essential items. Walmaggia noted, “When households are spending more on petrol to get to work, school, or essential appointments, it leaves less money available for groceries.”
As living costs continue to rise, NPCC has become an essential frontline service in the community, providing more than just food to over 1,100 visitors weekly. Walmaggia explained, “Many people come for more than groceries – they come for conversation, support, and a sense of belonging. Financial stress and social isolation often go hand in hand.”
To mitigate fuel expenses, NPCC president Roz Blades encourages the community to reduce car travel. She suggested strategies such as consolidating grocery shopping into weekly trips or carpooling. “Getting to work is the most important thing. If you live near public transport, that’s the cheapest way to travel,” Blades advised.
The need for non-perishable food donations is now greater than ever, particularly as NPCC’s pantry was completely emptied last Friday. The food pantry is open every Friday at 12 PM at NPCC, located on Memorial Drive in Noble Park. Donations are welcomed, and those interested can find more information by calling 9547 5801 or visiting nobleparkcc.org.au.
The rising costs of living and fuel are pushing more individuals towards services like NPCC, highlighting the urgent need for community support and resources.
