URGENT UPDATE: A striking display of models built by veterans is now on show at Melton Library, highlighting the creative talents of local heroes while promoting mental wellbeing. The exhibition features intricate replicas, including a Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle and Royal Australian Navy vessel, crafted as part of the Melton RSL Sub-branch’s innovative veterans’ scale model building club.
The club, led by award-winning model builder Michael Bradshaw, engages around 25 members each month in hands-on workshops focused on model construction. This initiative, conceptualized by immediate past president Stephen Cook, underlines the sub-branch’s commitment to veteran wellbeing. “This is about more than just building models,” said Sam Welham, secretary of the Melton RSL Sub-branch. “It provides a creative, social, and mindful outlet for veterans managing challenges like PTSD.”
The program is designed to foster connection and positive mental health, especially for those coping with the aftermath of military service. “Programs like this play a vital role in veteran wellness and community connection,” Welham added. Participants receive a starter kit featuring a model of their choice, along with paint, tools, and accessories, offering them a chance to explore their creativity while sharing meaningful stories.
The models are more than mere replicas; they hold personal significance for many veterans, serving as avenues for storytelling, reflection, and pride. The exhibition will be on display at Melton Library until early December 2023, inviting the community to appreciate the artistry while supporting veteran initiatives.
This initiative not only showcases the skills of veterans but also reinforces the importance of peer support and camaraderie in the healing process. As these models take center stage, they symbolize purpose and pride for those who have dedicated their lives to service.
Head to Melton Library now to experience this unique exhibition and support our veterans. It’s an opportunity to engage with their creativity and resilience while promoting awareness of veteran mental health issues. Don’t miss your chance to witness this inspiring display!
