UPDATE: Construction has officially begun on a new roundabout in Malua Bay, with major upgrades to the George Bass Drive intersection at Sylvan Street and Kuppa Avenue. This urgent project aims to enhance traffic efficiency and improve safety for drivers commuting between Batemans Bay and Broulee.
The new roundabout is set to include advanced pedestrian and bicycle crossings, as well as new traffic lights and pavement rehabilitation to accommodate B-Doubles. In addition, there will be improvements to stormwater drainage and the extension of gutters, ensuring better infrastructure for the growing community.
While this project will result in the loss of five parking spaces on the western end of Kuppa Avenue, Eurobodalla Shire Council has promised that additional parking will be created at the beach end, guaranteeing a net zero loss for locals. The existing bus stop will also be relocated and raised to match the new road level.
Construction is set to proceed from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, minimizing disruption to the community while reducing noise and vibrations for nearby residents. Drivers are urged to expect moderate traffic delays during this period and to allow an extra five minutes for their journeys.
The roundabout is expected to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting. Once the main construction phase is finalized, landscaping will begin, featuring primarily native plants to enhance the area’s natural beauty.
With work already underway, the community is encouraged to stay informed about the progress and potential impacts on local traffic. This major infrastructure project is not just a construction endeavor; it represents a significant upgrade benefiting the safety and efficiency of daily commutes in the region.
Stay tuned for further updates as this important project develops!
