UPDATE: The Caroline Springs Lakers have just announced a groundbreaking signing for the 2024 Western Netball League season: former Melbourne Vixen star Rahni Samason is set to join the team in what is considered one of the biggest acquisitions in league history. Fans and players alike are buzzing with excitement as this development promises to elevate the Lakers’ competitive edge.

Samason, renowned for her exceptional shooting skills and game-changing abilities, has made significant impacts in both the Australian ANZ Premiership and the netball community at large. The Lakers’ netball coordinator, Nadine Oborne, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We’ve gone big this year. It’s very exciting!”

This signing is not just a boon for the seniors; it also serves as an inspiration for the Lakers’ junior program. Oborne emphasized the importance of building pathways for young talent, saying, “Juniors will look up to her and see they are at the same club.”

A family connection played a pivotal role in Samason’s decision. After visiting the club for a clinic a few months back, she was drawn to the vibrant atmosphere among both junior and senior players. “She didn’t hesitate,” Oborne noted, underlining the ease with which Samason fit into the Lakers’ culture.

In addition to Samason, the Lakers have also signed Charlize Bellette, who recently debuted in the SN reserves with the Melbourne Mavericks. Bellette is a promising addition, currently part of the under-19 Victorian squad, and will benefit greatly from playing alongside Samason. “To play with someone in the circle with Rahni’s experience will help her game,” Oborne remarked.

As the Lakers gear up for the new season, they are determined to continue their trend of success. The club fielded five teams in 2025, with all but one making it to the finals. The division 1 team claimed the minor premiership but fell short of the grand final. Oborne reiterated the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent, stating, “We’ve got a lot of juniors coming through into seniors as soon as they turn 15.”

The Lakers are currently in pre-season training, with trials showing promising participation numbers. Oborne confirmed they are considering entering either five or six teams for the upcoming season, and there are plans to introduce a men’s side in the new division. “It’s a new chapter for Lakers netball,” she stated.

The excitement extends beyond the professional ranks; an exhibition match showcased the dynamic playing styles of both men’s and women’s teams, providing junior players with valuable insights into the sport.

As the Lakers prepare for a transformative season, fans are eager to see how the addition of Samason and the development of young talent will shape their journey. With pre-season underway, all eyes will be on the Lakers as they aim for premiership success and continue to build a legacy in the netball community.
