UPDATE: A man accused of violently attacking two prison guards at the Tamworth Correctional Centre has failed to appear in court, leading to urgent legal proceedings. Joshua Lee Murray, 25, did not show up when his case was called today, prompting the magistrate to enter pleas on his behalf.
During the hearing in Tamworth Local Court, Magistrate Julie Soars expressed concern over Murray’s absence, which was expected to be via video link from custody. This serious situation arises from an incident that occurred between 2 PM and 2:20 PM on September 10, 2023, when Murray allegedly punched two corrections officers during their duties.
With the police prosecutor, Sergeant Brent Robinson, aiming to proceed with a conviction in Murray’s absence, the magistrate requested that his legal representative, Louis Gasparinatos from the Aboriginal Legal Service, provide an explanation for his non-appearance. As a result, not guilty pleas were formally entered on Murray’s behalf for all charges, which include two counts of assaulting a law officer and inflicting actual bodily harm.
Magistrate Soars characterized the charges as “very serious,” noting the implications of allegedly “bashing” two prison guards. As the legal process unfolds, she has ordered a brief of evidence to be submitted by February 2024, with the case set to return to court in March 2024. Murray remains in custody as authorities continue to address the gravity of his alleged actions.
