BREAKING: A man has been arrested and charged for allegedly selling stolen police uniforms, raising urgent concerns over security and accountability in law enforcement procurement. Benjamin Lee Onley, aged 50, appeared in Sutherland Local Court today, facing serious allegations of illegally selling at least 28 pieces of police attire.
Onley, who had access to the uniforms through his employment with a company that manages the procurement and disposal of NSW Police Force insignia, is accused of stealing a total of 71 pieces of unauthorized law enforcement uniforms. Authorities report that investigations are ongoing to trace the complete origin of the stolen items.
Earlier this month, detectives executed a search warrant at Onley’s home in Thirroul, located on the south coast of New South Wales, on July 11, 2023. During the search, they seized his mobile phone, which reportedly contained evidence of his attempts to sell the stolen uniforms. Included among the seized items were badges, caps, and brimmed hats, as shown in photos released by NSW Police.
The disturbing revelations do not stop there; Onley was also found to be in possession of unauthorized firearms, including a pistol. Following his arrest, he faces four serious charges, including possession of stolen property and prohibited firearms.
After not applying for bail during his initial court appearance, Onley remains in custody. The case is set to return to court on August 12, where further developments are expected.
This alarming situation raises significant questions about security protocols surrounding police uniform distribution and procurement. The NSW Police have confirmed that they are actively investigating the matter to prevent any further breaches.
