UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison after stealing thousands of intimate images and videos from unsuspecting women by hacking into their online accounts via fraudulent Wi-Fi networks. The 44-year-old was found guilty of multiple charges, including unauthorized access to personal data and attempted destruction of evidence.
Authorities confirmed that the man was apprehended in April 2023 after airline staff reported a suspicious Wi-Fi network during a domestic flight. When he landed, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) searched his luggage, discovering a portable wireless access device, laptop, and mobile phone—key instruments used in his cybercrimes.
A search warrant executed at his home in Palmyra revealed a trove of 1,752 intimate images and videos on his phone. In a desperate attempt to cover his tracks, he deleted a significant amount of data and tried to remotely wipe his device. Shockingly, he even accessed confidential meetings between his employer and the AFP regarding the investigation.
AFP Commander Renee Colley emphasized the growing threat of cybercrime, stating, “The AFP’s message to the community is to please be vigilant when connecting to any kind of free Wi-Fi network, especially at public places such as airports.” She urged the public to avoid networks requesting personal details and to use reputable virtual private networks (VPNs) for added security.
The man’s fraudulent Wi-Fi page tricked victims into logging in with their social media or email accounts, allowing him to save their data. “The man unlawfully accessed social media and other online accounts linked to multiple unsuspecting women to monitor their communications and steal private and intimate images and videos,” the AFP spokesperson confirmed.
As cyber threats escalate, experts warn that users must remain cautious. Colley advised individuals to disable file sharing, refrain from online banking on public Wi-Fi, and change device settings to ‘forget network’ after use. She strongly recommended that anyone who has connected to a free Wi-Fi network should promptly change their passwords.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in using public networks, reinforcing the need for heightened awareness and cybersecurity measures. Stay informed, stay safe, and share this alert to protect others from potential cyber threats.
