UPDATE: Melbourne Airport has just launched an urgent community consultation to address growing concerns over aircraft noise as it prepares for the construction of its third runway, set to open in 2031. This initiative is crucial as it aims to mitigate the anticipated increase in noise exposure for residents living in close proximity, particularly in the Hume and Brimbank areas.
The airport’s noise amelioration plan seeks to prioritize homes and sensitive public buildings likely to be affected by the new runway. Officials have already sent out over 1,100 letters to affected homes, inviting feedback on how residents prefer to engage in this consultation process. A spokesperson for Melbourne Airport stated, “Eligibility for residences will be determined according to the conditions of the Minister’s approval…within the ANEF25 contour.”
The consultation is set to run through November, allowing residents to participate via an online survey, direct contact with the airport, or by attending upcoming in-person sessions. The program will focus on buildings where noise impacts sleep, learning, communication, and overall health, with hundreds of homes, schools, childcare centers, and medical facilities expected to qualify.
As concerns mount, particularly in Brimbank, residents have voiced apprehension that the airport’s noise mitigation efforts may be misleading. Many are advocating for transparency regarding the extent of noise that will come with the new runway. “We have been transparent about the additional aircraft noise some communities will hear,” the spokesperson reassured. “Since 2022, we have communicated directly with impacted communities.”
To further assist residents, Melbourne Airport has launched an online noise tool, enabling them to visualize the expected impact of the third runway upon its opening. This resource is part of the airport’s commitment to keeping the community informed and engaged.
The final scope of the Noise Amelioration Plan will be submitted to the Federal Minister for Infrastructure for approval in late 2026, following updated noise forecasts that will determine the exact number of affected properties. Community engagement is critical during this period, as officials aim to address and alleviate the concerns of those most impacted by the runway’s expansion.
As the consultation progresses, it is essential for residents to make their voices heard. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as the increased noise is expected to significantly affect the quality of life for many in the surrounding neighborhoods. Stay tuned for updates as further developments unfold.
