UPDATE: Melbourne Avalon Airport is on the brink of a significant transformation that promises to reshape the economic future of Wyndham and Geelong. Chief Executive Ari Suss revealed crucial plans that will enhance freight capabilities and drive aviation growth, making Avalon a central hub for logistics and employment.
Avalon Airport may not be the focus of media headlines currently, but a major expansion is underway. Suss emphasized that while passenger flights are essential, the airport’s future is heavily reliant on bolstering its freight operations. With major companies like Australia Post, Cotton On, and PetStock establishing bases at Avalon, alongside defense giants Lockheed Martin and Hanwha, the groundwork is being laid for substantial growth.
The airport has just unveiled a new freight terminal, poised to increase its annual air-freight capacity from 10,000 tonnes to over 100,000 tonnes. This strategic enhancement is designed to attract large-scale scheduled cargo operations. “Freight has traditionally been moved through Melbourne Airport, but with Tullamarine becoming increasingly congested, Avalon is perfectly positioned in the country’s fastest-growing corridor,” Suss stated.
Leanne Down, Chief Executive of the Committee for Wyndham, highlighted Avalon as a game-changer for regional economic growth. “This development creates jobs, supports tourism, and enhances connectivity,” she said. “More opportunities at Avalon mean residents can work closer to home, improving their work-life balance and reducing travel time.”
Michael Johnstone, Chief Executive of the Committee for Geelong, echoed these sentiments, declaring Avalon a critical asset for the region’s development. “Avalon will support upwards of 15,000 workers daily, and as a logistics hub, it will connect air, sea, rail, and road transport,” Johnstone explained. “As demand for international services increases, Avalon’s connectivity will elevate Geelong’s global business profile.”
Suss is also committed to expanding passenger flights, currently serving destinations like Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. He expressed optimism about reopening the international terminal in 2026, stating, “We are in advanced discussions and hope to see more flights and destinations next year.”
Tourism trends post-COVID-19 also offer fresh opportunities. Suss noted, “One in every ten visitors from the Indian subcontinent spends at least one night in Wyndham,” highlighting a shift in tourist demographics. “While inbound Chinese tourism has waned, Indian visitation has surged, and we are keenly aware of this trend.”
Down added that resuming international flights would revolutionize regional tourism. “More flights into Avalon will increase visitor access to attractions like Werribee Park, Werribee Open Range Zoo, and the Victoria State Rose Garden, bolstering local businesses,” she said.
As Melbourne’s population is projected to exceed nine million by 2050, Avalon’s role as a secondary airport becomes crucial. “Melbourne must follow the example of global cities like London, which benefit from multiple airports,” Suss pointed out. “Avalon is just 34 minutes from the West Gate Bridge, making it an ideal alternative.”
Suss also highlighted the economic impact of international tourists, who spend an average of $3,000 per visit compared to $1,200 from domestic travelers. “Capturing this traffic through Avalon could significantly benefit the region,” he stated.
With the airport’s distance from residential areas, Avalon is positioned to develop rapidly without disrupting local communities. “Avalon is a curfew-free airport, allowing us to operate without noise concerns,” Suss emphasized.
Looking ahead, Avalon is exploring a light rail connection to enhance accessibility. Suss mentioned ongoing discussions with the state government to reroute bus routes, aiming for immediate improvements. “We anticipate a positive outcome in the coming months,” he concluded.
This expansion is set to transform Avalon Airport into a vital economic engine for Victoria, with implications that will resonate throughout the region. Stay tuned for further updates as developments unfold.
