URGENT UPDATE: A Melbourne couple has launched serious accusations against Virgin Australia, claiming racial profiling during a recent flight incident. The couple, Timothy and Irene, were traveling from Melbourne to the Gold Coast on December 27, 2023, when they faced a distressing ordeal involving Irene’s family, who are of Asian descent.

The couple planned their holiday months in advance, purchasing exit row seats for themselves and Irene’s grandmother. However, when Irene’s parents sought to upgrade to exit row seats, a troubling incident unfolded at the airport. Irene reported that when they approached the boarding area, a cabin crew member allegedly began “yelling” at her family, questioning their English-speaking abilities.

“I asked my grandma what was wrong in Chinese, as she was clearly in distress,” Irene recounted. The couple claims the crew member exhibited a disturbing double standard, addressing Timothy differently due to his Caucasian appearance. “He looked at Timothy and said, ‘Well, of course you can speak English,’” she stated.

As tensions escalated, the family was separated, with Irene’s grandmother relocated to a seat at the back of the plane. This shocking treatment left the family shaken, prompting them to file a complaint with Virgin Australia upon arrival in Queensland.

Despite their complaints, Virgin Australia denied any discriminatory behavior. A spokesperson stated, “We apologize that the response provided did not meet your expectations; however, we strongly deny that there has been any discriminatory behaviour by our team members.” The airline emphasized that specific safety criteria must be followed for exit row seating, including understanding English instructions.

However, Irene expressed dissatisfaction with the airline’s response, finding it inadequate and dismissive of their experience. “We were prepared for an acknowledgment and an apology,” she said. “But it is appalling that this behavior is deemed acceptable by Virgin Australia.”

Following the incident, the family has escalated their complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, reflecting their deep concern over the treatment received. Irene’s parents, both Australian citizens for over 40 years, and her grandmother, a citizen for over 30 years, feel disheartened by the apparent lack of respect for their longstanding ties to the country.

The family is now hesitant to fly with Virgin Australia again, fearing a repeat of the distressing encounter. “It is truly disheartening that Virgin Australia’s definition of diversity and inclusion only applies if you are Caucasian-presenting,” Irene lamented.

As this story develops, it raises significant questions about inclusivity and respect within the airline industry. Watch for further updates as the Australian Human Rights Commission begins its investigation.
