Residents in Melbourne’s western suburbs can now access free mental health care from the comfort of their homes through a new home-based care initiative. The program, launched by Western Health, operates from Sunshine Hospital and provides treatment for individuals living with acute mental health conditions.
Under this innovative model, known as Hospital in the Home (HitH), a total of 10 dedicated beds have been established for patients. This approach aims to deliver hospital-equivalent care directly to patients’ homes, allowing them to remain close to their families and support networks. The initiative is designed to alleviate pressure on hospital beds and crowded emergency departments.
A specialized team comprising experienced psychiatrists, mental health nurses, allied health professionals, and peer workers will provide tailored care to consumers. Services will be available through both face-to-face and telehealth appointments, ensuring that consumers and their caregivers are actively involved at every stage of their treatment.
The program, based at the Sunshine Mental Health and Wellbeing Centre, has also resulted in the creation of 25 new jobs, including that of a dedicated program manager. This is in line with similar successful HitH services already offered by Barwon Health and the Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service.
Mental Health Minister Ingrid Stitt highlighted that this program represents a significant step in making free mental health care more accessible to Victorians. “This initiative ensures that support is available where and when it is needed most,” she stated.
The launch of this home-based care program marks a pivotal moment for mental health services in Victoria, addressing the urgent needs of individuals while promoting the importance of community and family involvement in the recovery process. By bringing mental health care into the home environment, this initiative not only enhances patient comfort but also supports broader public health objectives.
