UPDATE: Melbourne’s youth activist, Sophie Basist, has surged into the national spotlight, declaring her ambition to become Australia’s first female prime minister. The 15-year-old Jewish advocate delivered a powerful speech at an anti-terrorism rally on the steps of the Victorian Parliament, marking a significant moment in her burgeoning political career.

Just recently, Sophie was awarded the inaugural Upstander Award by B’nai B’rith International for her courageous stance against antisemitism and her public support for Israel. Her activism has resonated widely, particularly among her peers, as she uses social media to combat hate and promote understanding.

Sophie’s journey into activism took a decisive turn following the events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel. She was attending a Simchat Torah celebration at Mount Scopus Memorial College when the attack occurred. “After October 7, I wanted to educate myself more,” Sophie stated. “Seeing the atrocities pushed me to advocate for the truth.”

At the recent rally on July 6, 2023, Sophie stood before a crowd of 1,000 people, alongside Iranian and Hindu groups, transitioning from a local voice to a nationally recognized advocate. “My dream is to be a politician. I’d love to be prime minister,” she shared confidently, highlighting her determination to inspire a new generation in the fight against antisemitism.

Despite her youthful age, Sophie is acutely aware of the mixed reactions to her activism. While she has received positive responses, especially from non-Jewish Australians, some Jewish peers at school have expressed skepticism. “A lot of people think I’m a bit too serious for my age,” she remarked. However, she remains undeterred, stating, “I would rather do this than go to parties.”

Sophie’s mother, Marni Weinstein, expressed pride and concern over her daughter’s outspoken nature. “It’s hard as a parent, but what she wants to do is admirable,” she said. Marni and Sophie’s father, Josh Basist, have had to navigate the fine line between supporting their daughter and ensuring her safety amid the intense scrutiny and opposition she faces.

The rally marked a watershed moment in Sophie’s advocacy, receiving overwhelming support and sparking conversations on social media platforms. Her message, “You’re never too young to advocate,” has struck a chord, particularly among younger Australians who identify with her cause.

Looking to the future, Sophie plans to attend Monash University to study politics or law, aiming to create a supportive organization for Jewish teens interested in advocacy. “The rise in antisemitism is alarming,” she emphasized, linking the urgency of her mission to historical lessons from the Holocaust.

Sophie Basist is not just a voice for her generation; she is a catalyst for change, urging young people everywhere to engage in meaningful dialogue about their beliefs. As her advocacy continues to gain traction, she invites others to join her in this vital fight for truth and justice.
