BREAKING: Melton South resident John Bateson has just celebrated his 100th birthday in a joyous gathering surrounded by family and friends. The milestone event took place yesterday, July 28, 2025, at Bolton Clarke Melton South, where Bateson received an outpouring of love and recognition.

Born in Prahran in 1925, Bateson has lived a remarkable life, filled with passion for the outdoors and a love for sports. He famously won the school tennis championship in 1938 and later became a skilled mechanical engineer. His journey took him to Tasmania, where he met his wife, June Bateson, before marrying in Melbourne in 1950. Together, they raised two children, William and Marjorie, the latter of whom traveled from New Zealand to join in the celebration.

The festivities kicked off with a special lunch in a private dining room, where Bateson received heartfelt congratulations and birthday cards from various dignitaries, including King Charles and local Australian politicians. Lifestyle coordinator Debbie Webb shared that the atmosphere was electric, with family and residents alike showering Bateson with well-wishes.

In a delightful touch, the entertainment for the day featured a lively performance by the group The Golden Girls, captivating Bateson and his fellow residents for an hour and a half. Webb stated, “We had the table set up with him and his family so everyone could go up and wish him a happy birthday and see all his cards … he got them from everywhere!”

Bateson received a special gift from the organization: a teacup emblazoned with ‘100’. The joy he felt from the day was evident, with Webb noting he was still reminiscing about the celebration the following morning.

This event not only marks a significant milestone for Bateson but also highlights the importance of community and family in celebrating such remarkable lives. As members of the Melton community reflect on this inspiring centenarian, many are inspired to share in the spirit of joy and togetherness that Bateson embodies.
