UPDATE: The Melton Wolves are poised for a transformative season in Gridiron Victoria after a dedicated off-season, aiming to capitalize on their recent efforts. Having narrowly missed the championship game last season by just one game, the Wolves are ready to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
The team has faced challenges with player numbers in recent years, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, quarterback Blake D’Ascola expressed optimism about the new season, stating, “We’ve been recruiting non-stop since the end of last season. It’s been really good with a lot more bodies coming down.” The pre-season began four weeks ago, and the Wolves are on track to field a roster of 25 to 30 players, a significant increase from the 15-16 players they struggled with last year.
“Due to the lack of numbers, there was a bit of a domino effect on the field as we relied heavily on the same guys last season,” D’Ascola remarked. He emphasized that the hard work put into recruitment has not only bolstered the player roster but has also strengthened the club’s off-field support, with more individuals joining the committee.
Head coach Brad Baker, who has been with the team since its inception, continues to lead the Wolves, having initially stepped in due to injuries. D’Ascola confirmed that additional coaching staff has been brought on board to assist Baker, enhancing the team’s overall strategy and training.
With the competition in Division 2 expanding rapidly, D’Ascola is confident that the Wolves can secure a championship title this season. “There is going to be more Division 2 teams, and we think we can have a real hot chance at a championship at the end of the year,” he stated.
As excitement builds for the new season, the Melton Wolves are not only ready to take the field but are also working hard to create a supportive and engaged community around the club. Fans and supporters are encouraged to follow the Wolves’ journey as they prepare for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead.
