UPDATE: The excitement is palpable as Minstrel has surged to $2.15 favoritism for the Group 1 $450,000 WA Pacing Cup (2536m) at Gloucester Park following a promising barrier draw this morning. The seasoned eight-year-old will start from gate two, a position his co-trainer Greg Bond believes is ideal for a strong performance.

Minstrel faces tough competition, notably from Magnificent Storm, who will begin from gate eight and is currently the second favorite at $4.50. Bond expressed confidence in Minstrel’s positioning, stating, “Two is preferred to one for us in case we get crossed and he’s stuck away,” during an interview with SEN. This strategic draw keeps Minstrel in the running line, which aligns with his racing style.

Earlier this month, Minstrel showcased his grit by racing alongside Magnificent Storm during the Stratton Cup, ultimately outpacing him in the final stretch. “If the same horse turns up Friday night as was there two weeks ago, we’ll be very happy,” Bond added.

In addition to Minstrel, Bond also has a wildcard entry, Gee Heza Sport, listed at $34. This contender previously placed in the Nullarbor and is poised to make a significant impact from the start. “He’s going to be up on the speed somewhere, hopefully with a bit of cover,” Bond noted about his chances.

The stakes have risen with the recent scratching of Lavra Joe, allowing Golden Lode to step in from barrier 10. This shift adds more intrigue to the race lineup. The only other horse competing below double figures is Mister Smartee, trained by Gary Hall Sr., who is currently at $5. Owner Glen Moore expressed optimism regarding Mister Smartee’s performance, citing his impressive trackwork leading up to the race.

With numerous contenders vying for early supremacy, Moore anticipates an intense battle at the start, particularly between Magnificent Storm and Minstrel. “There’s not a lot of speed between him and Minstrel, so I think he’ll get across,” Moore predicted.

As the WA Pacing Cup approaches this Friday night, all eyes will be on Gloucester Park. The race promises to deliver high stakes and fierce competition, with multiple outcomes possible depending on how the early stages unfold.

Fans and bettors alike are eager to see if Minstrel can maintain his form and deliver another thrilling performance. With just days to go, the anticipation continues to build for this high-stakes event in the harness racing calendar. Keep an eye on the latest updates as the race day approaches.
