UPDATE: The Moorabool Council has taken decisive action to enhance pet ownership responsibilities by formally adopting its Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) for 2026-29. This plan, announced just today, aims to transform how domestic animals are managed across the shire over the next four years, emphasizing the urgent need for responsible pet ownership and improved animal welfare.
The council’s comprehensive strategy includes increased community education regarding microchipping, registration, desexing, and animal containment. Authorities stress that these initiatives are vital for effective compliance and enforcement. With registration deadlines fast approaching in April, the council plans to launch an intensive media campaign alongside community engagement forums to boost awareness and participation.
During a community consultation phase via the council’s Have Your Say platform in October, more than 4,000 registered pet owners were contacted, resulting in 70 submissions—most of which expressed strong support for the plan’s focus on responsible pet ownership.
Cr Rod Ward highlighted a concerning trend: despite a significant increase in Moorabool’s population over the last five years, the number of registered dogs and cats has inexplicably decreased. “Increasing registration education is a priority,” Ward stated, underscoring the urgent need for community awareness.
The DAMP is designed to not only promote pet ownership responsibilities but also to enhance training for authorized officers and improve data collection and reporting. These measures will allow better evaluation of animal management services, ensuring that pets and their owners receive the support they need.
As the April registration deadline approaches, it is crucial for pet owners in Moorabool to stay informed and participate in upcoming educational initiatives. The council’s proactive approach marks a significant step toward fostering a community that prioritizes animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
Residents are encouraged to share this information widely to ensure all pet owners are aware of their responsibilities and the resources available to them. Stay tuned for more updates as this important initiative unfolds.
