UPDATE: Mountain biking veteran Grant Lebbink has officially purchased a home in Eden, NSW, driven by his passion for the sport and the stunning local trails. This announcement comes as the region hosts the thrilling Orca event, part of the Quad Crown series, which is currently captivating riders and spectators alike.

The three-day MTB event kicked off on September 12, where over 120 riders participated in exhilarating competitions, showcasing their skills on the breathtaking trails of the Sapphire Coast. Lebbink, a seasoned rider with 25 years of experience, expressed his admiration for the area, stating, “It’s taken me all over Australia… I ride six days a week because it’s so accessible everywhere now.”

As competitors tackled the challenging terrain, the atmosphere was electric. Lebbink cheered passionately, urging riders to “finish it off!” and “You’re having too much fun!” His enthusiasm highlights the community spirit that permeates this event, blending elite racers with those participating for enjoyment.

The weekend has brought together a mix of locals and visitors, with significant turnouts from Melbourne, Newcastle, and Sydney. According to Sally Hill, director of the Quad Crown, “We want to show off these trails and get people to come back year after year.”

After the intense first stage, only a two-second gap separated the top two competitors, with Cam Ivory ultimately seizing the overall win after a nail-biting contest. Meanwhile, in the e-bike category, former world champion Paul van de Ploeg claimed victory, with local rider Kate Mitchell impressively outperforming her previous year’s time.

The event not only celebrates athletic achievement but also emphasizes the region’s allure. With the perfect weather and pristine trail conditions, riders experienced some of the best mountain biking in Australia. Hill described the trails as “absolutely mint,” reinforcing why events like this are crucial for promoting local tourism.

What’s next? As the Orca event continues, all eyes are on the upcoming stages, where competitors will push their limits yet again. The excitement surrounding the Quad Crown is palpable, with many eager to return for future events.
