URGENT UPDATE: Inspirational ultramarathon athlete Nedd Brockmann has been nominated for the prestigious Young Australian of the Year award, following his incredible efforts to combat homelessness across the nation. The announcement from NSW comes as Brockmann continues to make headlines for his charitable initiatives and relentless spirit.
Brockmann, 26, first captured national attention in 2022 by running an astonishing 3,952 km from Perth to Sydney, raising over $2.6 million for homelessness. His dedication has not waned; he subsequently founded Nedd’s Uncomfortable Challenges, inspiring fellow Australians to take on personal challenges to support the homeless. This initiative has so far raised more than $8 million.
In addition to his fundraising, Brockmann plans to run 1,000 miles (approximately 1,600 km) in just 12 days at Sydney’s Olympic Park in 2024, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the cause.
Other nominees include humanitarian worker Alison Thompson, recognized for her lifetime of service in disaster and war zones. Thompson’s journey began on September 11, 2001, when she rollerbladed into ground zero in New York, delivering medical supplies to survivors. She later founded Third Wave Volunteers, which has mobilized over 30,000 volunteers to assist more than 18 million people in crisis situations, including multiple aid trips to Ukraine.
The NSW Senior Australian of the Year award went to dementia treatment pioneer Henry Brodaty, who co-founded the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing in 2012. His efforts have led to crucial advancements in dementia research and prevention.
In the Local Hero category, Theresa Mitchell was honored for her work with Agape Outreach, which provides 1,500 hot meals each week to those experiencing homelessness and has fostered 37 children.
National Australia Day Council CEO Mark Fraser praised all nominees, stating, “Alison not only shows us we can all help others, she enables people to help where it is needed most. Nedd decided to help people in need and created a movement of care.”
