new-initiative-aims-to-strengthen-australia-s-agricultural-workforce

A new research initiative is set to address the pressing issue of agricultural labor and skills shortages in five key regions of Australia. AgriFutures Australia, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), has launched the Strategic Analysis of Regional Workforce Pressures in Australian Agriculture project. This effort aims to enhance the understanding of workforce dynamics affecting the agricultural sector in the Riverina, Wide Bay, South East Perth, Murray-Darling, and Swan Hill and Toowoomba Darling Downs regions.

The initiative will gather insights through targeted surveys and stakeholder interviews. These findings will facilitate discussions between government and industry regarding workforce challenges. According to Simon Vincent, General Manager of Rural Futures at AgriFutures Australia, the project emphasizes the importance of community engagement.

“Every region has its own story, its own strengths and challenges,” Mr. Vincent stated, highlighting the unique circumstances that each area faces. Agriculture plays a crucial role in Australia’s economy, contributing billions of dollars and offering diverse career opportunities. However, labor shortages and uneven access to skills in certain sectors are straining regional production systems.

The project seeks to include a wide array of participants, aiming to incorporate perspectives from community members, workers, employers, and organizations within the five regions. Their contributions will be vital in shaping a more robust agricultural workforce moving forward.

Surveys will remain open for six weeks, with a final report expected to be released in mid-2026. Community members are encouraged to participate and can access the survey [here](#).

By fostering collaboration between training providers, employers, and local councils, the initiative aspires to create a sustainable workforce that meets the evolving needs of Australia’s agricultural landscape. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that all stakeholders are represented, ultimately leading to a more resilient agricultural sector.
