URGENT UPDATE: A new leader has just been announced for Marine Rescue Northern Rivers, following a decisive election held during the Annual General Meeting in Cronulla on October 14, 2023. Former Marine Rescue Point Danger Unit Commander Keith Smith has been elected unopposed as the new Northern Rivers Regional Director, taking over from Darcy Henriksen, who stepped down after an impressive six-year tenure.

Marine Rescue New South Wales Chair, Nola Watson, praised Henriksen’s dedication and professionalism, noting his 17 years of volunteer service at Marine Rescue Point Danger in the Tweed Shire. “Darcy has brought genuine care for his fellow volunteers to the Board,” Watson stated.

Keith Smith, who began his volunteering career in search and rescue in the early 1990s, joined Marine Rescue Point Danger in 2019. He brings with him a wealth of experience, boasting over 30 years of combined maritime and corporate leadership, including significant roles in the transport and logistics sector.

In a statement following his election, Smith expressed his pride and commitment: “It’s a privilege to represent the dedicated volunteers of the Northern Rivers, and I am committed to supporting them as they continue their vital work saving lives on the water.” His leadership is expected to foster a strong community among the volunteers, enhancing their ability to respond to emergencies.

This transition in leadership is significant for the Marine Rescue community and underscores the ongoing commitment to safety and rescue efforts in NSW waters. The organization plays a critical role in safeguarding lives, and with Smith at the helm, there is a renewed focus on supporting the volunteers who dedicate their time and efforts to these life-saving missions.

As this story develops, all eyes will be on Smith’s initiatives and leadership style as he takes on this important role. For those interested in marine safety and community service, this leadership change marks a pivotal moment for Marine Rescue Northern Rivers.
