A new dual-lane roundabout has opened at the busy intersection of Morley Drive and Bath Road, set to benefit over 25,000 daily commuters. This development fulfills a commitment made by the Western Australia (WA) Labor Government during the last election, with the project costing approximately $10 million. The roundabout aims to significantly enhance safety and alleviate congestion in this heavily trafficked area.
The implementation of the roundabout is part of a broader strategy to improve transportation infrastructure in the region. Alongside the roundabout, local road modifications have been made, which include improved street lighting and shared paths at the intersection. Notably, pedestrian safety has been addressed with the addition of median refuges on all three legs of the intersection, providing safer crossings for foot traffic.
Government Officials Highlight Benefits
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasized the positive impact of the new infrastructure. “Our government is delivering millions of dollars in upgrades to local roads right across our State to improve safety, traffic flow and bust congestion,” she stated. She noted that traffic modeling predicts the new roundabout will reduce the number of crashes at this location by more than 83 per cent.
“This will deliver a significant benefit for the community and is part of our government’s ongoing investment to improve the safety and efficiency of our road network,” Saffioti added.
Local Member of Parliament Amber-Jade Sanderson also expressed her support for the project, highlighting the long-standing concerns regarding safety at the intersection. “The new roundabout will significantly improve safety and access for local residents around the Bath Road area,” she remarked. Sanderson conveyed pride in fulfilling this important election commitment, which she believes will make daily commutes smoother for locals and enhance safety for all road users.
Future Enhancements and Community Impact
In addition to the roundabout, the City of Bayswater plans to undertake landscaping works to further beautify the area. These enhancements are expected to contribute to a more pleasant environment for both residents and commuters alike.
The opening of the Morley Drive roundabout marks a significant step forward in addressing traffic congestion and ensuring safer travel conditions. As local officials continue to advocate for infrastructure improvements, this project exemplifies the commitment to enhancing the efficiency of the road network and prioritizing the safety of the community.
