UPDATE: The Nhill Show has just set a new record with over 2,600 entries, marking a significant increase from last year’s 2,200. This vibrant community event, held last Thursday in Nhill, Victoria, showcased a diverse range of talents and activities, captivating attendees with its spirit and enthusiasm.

The show opened with a special ceremony led by local legend Merv Schneider, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday. The excitement continued throughout the day as trade sites buzzed with visitors, highlighting the community’s strong support for local agriculture and craftsmanship. The event culminated with a stunning fireworks display from Northern Fireworks, ignited by show president Darrell Hall.

A total of 29 horses participated in the horse section, coordinated by Donna Burns, who will pass the reins to Louise Hewitt while remaining involved in the background. The show featured numerous awards, with notable winners including Will Shilling for Champion Commercial Flock Fleece and Stella Schnaars for Most Outstanding Entry in Grain & Fodder.

The pavilion showcased extraordinary talent across various categories. Highlights included:
– Champion Photography: Sam Neumann
– Cooking Challenge: Alicia Alexander
– Best Exhibit – Cooking: Tricia Alexander
– Champion Bird of Show: Lloyd Poultry

The community also celebrated young talent through the Show Patron Competition, recognizing winners in various age categories, including Lexi Dickinson and Olive Curtis.

Despite intermittent rain and wind, the event attracted a massive turnout, with Darrell Hall commenting, “It was a fantastic turnout with lots of people.” The weather challenges did not dampen spirits; Blaze Aid volunteers provided invaluable assistance in setting up and dismantling the show.

The horse events concluded just before temperatures soared, ensuring a successful and enjoyable experience for all participants. The Zanker family contributed significantly by creating an animal nursery for children to interact with adorable animals, further enhancing the family-friendly atmosphere.

As the evening wrapped up with the fireworks display, Hall expressed his joy, stating, “It was great seeing everyone in the crowd watching as the sky lit up.” The committee plans to hold a debriefing session to discuss the event’s successes and areas for improvement.

Mark your calendars! The next Annual Nhill Show is scheduled for October 15, 2026. This year’s event not only celebrated local talent but also strengthened community bonds, demonstrating the enduring spirit of the Nhill region.
