BREAKING: The Norfolk Chapel in Karrakatta Cemetery has officially reopened following extensive repairs after an alleged arson incident that caused $1 million in damages. The chapel, located in Western Australia’s largest cemetery, had been closed for nearly a year after the devastating fire on October 1, 2022.
Authorities report that Tianna Addison Diodato Day, a 28-year-old woman, has been charged in connection with the fire. She is also accused of setting fire to a shed at Lakes Lawn Cemetery in Parklands, northeast of Mandurah, just days before the chapel fire. Day has pleaded guilty to four charges and is set to appear in court again on October 10, 2023, for sentencing.
The chapel reopened its doors on September 12, 2023, and resumed hosting services on September 15, 2023. The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board announced that a comprehensive restoration program was undertaken to ensure the chapel provides a “dignified, comfortable, and welcoming environment.”
The renovations included critical repairs to structural and roof elements, updated seating and lighting, and fresh interiors that honor the chapel’s original design. Notably, the chapel now boasts a redesigned condolence lounge, improving accessibility and enhancing fire safety systems to prevent future incidents.
Originally opened in 1991, the chapel can accommodate 96 people seated and an additional 114 standing. The reopening marks a significant moment for the community, as it allows families to once again gather in a space dedicated to remembrance and reflection.
