URGENT UPDATE: The North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has just celebrated its landmark 100th Annual General Meeting on August 17, 2023, marking a century of dedicated service to the community. Over 250 attendees, including officials, members, and supporters, gathered in a marquee due to ongoing construction at the clubhouse, initially expected to be completed for this significant milestone.
The club’s legacy began on the second Sunday of December 1925, when its first patrol hit the sands of Cronulla Beach, setting the foundation for decades of lifesaving service, camaraderie, and local pride. During the recent commemorative event, members paraded through Cronulla and onto the beach, showcasing a lifesaving display that highlights their ongoing commitment to beach safety.
Celebrations continued in Dunningham Park, where members donned the club’s uniform featuring a 100-year logo. A video presentation captured the club’s rich history, while awards were presented to recognize outstanding contributions from various members. A poignant moment included attendees standing in silence to honor those who have passed away, emphasizing the deep emotional ties within the community.
Among the highlights of the day was the elevation of four exceptional individuals—Tracey McKinniery, Ben Smollet, Linda Hawkins, and club president Geoff Budd—to Life Membership for their remarkable service. Warren Rennie AM, the club’s patron, was celebrated for his visionary leadership, driving the centenary celebrations forward.
Organizers expressed gratitude to major partner Tradies and local entities such as Sutherland Shire Council and other Bate Bay surf clubs for their invaluable support. Looking ahead, a centenary dinner is scheduled for May 9, 2024, promising further celebration of the club’s historic achievements.
As the club looks to the future, Sutherland Shire Council is expected to make a decisive ruling in September regarding the classification of the surf club land, paving the way for the completion of the redevelopment project. The tireless efforts of volunteers and committee members were crucial in ensuring the success of the weekend’s festivities, showcasing the strong community spirit that has defined North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club for a century.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the club continues to honor its legacy while looking forward to the next 100 years of service.
