URGENT UPDATE: The North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has officially launched its patrol season, marking a significant milestone as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. This special event, which took place over the weekend, featured a bagpiper leading the patrol onto the beach, creating a poignant atmosphere as the club reflects on a century of dedicated water safety service.

This year’s patrol is particularly notable with Donna Hargreaves serving as Patrol Captain and Ariane Sharp as Vice-Captain, highlighting the evolution of leadership in the organization. Over the past 100 years, an impressive 5,000 lifesavers have been trained by the club, collectively rescuing 16,000 individuals from dangerous surf conditions.

The impact of the North Cronulla Surf Club extends beyond rescues; it has also educated countless children about surf safety through its popular Nippers program. This initiative has played a vital role in fostering a culture of safety and awareness among younger generations.

Amidst the celebrations, the club remembers the sacrifices of its members. In February 1950, Major James “Jim” Peryman tragically lost his life while successfully rescuing 16-year-old Daphne Knowles. His bravery remains etched in the club’s history, with Peryman Place and the club’s training pool named in his honor. Numerous other members have also been recognized for their courageous acts in the face of danger.

Looking ahead, major celebrations are planned for the second Sunday in December, exactly 100 years from the date of the first patrol. This event is expected to draw significant attention and participation from the community, further emphasizing the club’s legacy and commitment to water safety.

As the surf lifesaving community gears up for another season, the North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club stands as a testament to resilience, bravery, and the enduring spirit of service. Stay tuned for more updates as the celebrations continue and the patrols operate through the summer months.
