UPDATE: The 2023 AFLW draft has delivered thrilling results for the Northern Knights and Calder Cannons, with both teams seeing three players selected each. The excitement peaked when Scarlett Johnson was picked second overall by the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

In a stunning turn of events, Johnson, who had been a frontrunner for the first pick, expressed her disbelief during the live draft coverage. “I’m just really happy I’m on an AFLW list,” she stated, reflecting on her journey. Her selection marks a significant milestone for the Knights, showcasing their talent on a national stage.

Meanwhile, Chloe Baker-West, a talented midfielder from the Cannons, was selected late in the first round at pick 22 by the Melbourne Demons. “I’m super excited,” Baker-West shared, highlighting her eagerness to contribute to her new team after averaging 33 disposals, 7 clearances, and 5 tackles in the Coates Talent League.

Following closely, Olivia Gorman of the Knights secured pick 25 from the Adelaide Crows. Gorman’s impressive average of 25 disposals, along with her skills showcased throughout the season, underscores her readiness for AFLW competition.

Jade McLay, the Cannons’ captain, has been drafted by the St Kilda Saints at pick 26, marking a comeback after an injury-plagued season. This selection continues St Kilda’s trend of picking Cannons talent, following last year’s choice of Kyla Forbes.

Another notable pick was Marlo Graham, who was taken by the Brisbane Lions at pick 33, despite facing challenges this season. Graham’s resilience and potential were key factors in her selection.

Former number one draft pick Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner successfully secured a spot with the North Melbourne Kangaroos, picked at 37 after a complex trade situation. Her determination to join the Kangaroos illustrates the competitive nature of the draft.

Additionally, Charlie O’Connor Moreira from the Western Jets, who impressed towards the end of the season, was selected by the Western Bulldogs at pick 45. O’Connor Moreira had previously doubted her draft prospects due to an early-season ankle injury, making her selection all the more significant.

Lastly, standout player Shauna McElligott, who earned the Cannons’ best and fairest title, has also been drafted by North Melbourne. Her versatility, transitioning from forward to midfield, was a strategic move that paid off during the season.

This year’s draft not only highlights the rising talents within the AFLW but also brings to light the emotional journeys of these players as they embark on new chapters in their careers. Fans and supporters eagerly await the impact these athletes will have in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates as these players join their new teams and prepare for the challenges ahead in the AFLW.
