UPDATE: The Oatley RSL Sub-branch hall on Letitia Street will be officially renamed in honor of Vietnam veteran William ‘Billy’ Wright on December 12, 2023, at 5 PM. This tribute recognizes Mr. Wright’s extraordinary contributions to both the military and local community.
Mr. Wright, a revered figure in Oatley and beyond, served in the Australian Army during the Vietnam War, where he was instrumental in various aviation support missions. His commitment to service was marked by bravery and technical expertise as a Corporal Engine Fitter at Nui Dat in 1969, where he aided critical air operations amidst enemy fire.
Local officials emphasize the significance of this renaming. Max Britton, Oatley RSL Sub-branch secretary, stated, “His passionate leadership and dedication to our veterans and community solidify his status as a local legend.” Mr. Wright’s presidency at the Oatley RSL Sub-branch, beginning in 2015, allowed him to author and fund a pivotal book on local war heroes, ensuring that the history of service members is preserved and honored.
This event marks a crucial moment for the community, as the hall will now bear the name “William ‘Billy’ Wright Sub-Branch Hall.” A mural commemorating Mr. Wright and other veterans will also be unveiled on Anzac Day, 2026, further celebrating their sacrifices and contributions.
Mr. Wright’s service journey began when he was conscripted into the Australian Army in February 1966. After extensive training, he was deployed to Vietnam, where he undertook missions that included medical evacuations and forward air control. His actions during a single infantry patrol, which faced an ambush, showcased his determination and leadership.
After returning from Vietnam in February 1970, Mr. Wright continued to serve in the Australian Army until September 1972. He later applied his skills as an engine fitter with Qantas for over 30 years, becoming known as one of the most experienced professionals in the Sydney Airport engineering precinct.
As the dedication approaches, the Oatley community is invited to join in honoring a man who has dedicated his life to serving others. This renaming is not just a tribute to Mr. Wright but also a reminder of the sacrifices made by all veterans.
Stay tuned for updates on this significant event and the unveiling of the mural, highlighting the stories of courage and commitment from the Oatley community and beyond.
