UPDATE: A new community initiative, the Waterlily Park Landcare Group, is making significant strides in revitalizing Waterlily Park in Ocean Shores. Formed in March 2023, the group focuses on removing invasive weeds and encouraging native wildlife, creating a healthier ecosystem for local residents and visitors.
This dedicated team of approximately a dozen members, including core volunteers who meet weekly, is actively engaged in crucial conservation efforts. “Our goal is to identify and preserve native plants while eliminating non-native species like Singapore daisy and Indian hawthorn,” said Ian Barker, a member of the group. The team’s efforts include mulching cleared areas and reintroducing native flora to enhance the park’s biodiversity.
Collaboration with the Byron Shire Council (BSC) has been pivotal in these efforts. The council’s bush regeneration team provides essential support in clearing weeds, identifying plants, and sharing best practices for effective regeneration. “The support we have received from BSC has been fantastic,” Ian added, highlighting the importance of community and local government partnerships.
In addition to plant restoration, the group is addressing aquatic challenges. They are working closely with the BSC drainage team to clear a section of the pond at the Orana Road drainage point. This effort aims to install booms that will prevent the blockage of drains by invasive salvinia and parrott’s feather weeds. “BSC is currently discussing solutions to manage these weeds effectively,” Ian explained.
The maintenance of Waterlily Park is an ongoing commitment, and the group is actively seeking more community involvement. Ian invites local residents to join their efforts or simply drop by for a chat on Wednesday mornings between 8 AM and 10 AM. “Everyone is welcome to contribute to the park’s upkeep,” he encouraged. Interested individuals can also reach out via email at [email protected] for additional information about getting involved.
As the Waterlily Park Landcare Group continues its vital work, the community’s participation is crucial for the success of this environmental initiative. The revitalization of Waterlily Park not only enhances local biodiversity but fosters a sense of community pride and collaboration.
