UPDATE: The redevelopment of the Old Kyneton Primary School site has reached a significant milestone with the completion of its first stage. This news comes as the Macedon Ranges Council seeks urgent updates on the project’s progress amidst growing community interest and concerns over delays.

In a move to enhance transparency, councillors resolved after their March meeting to contact Creative Victoria for a detailed status report on the $12 million project. Originally promised by the state government in 2021, the redevelopment aims to transform the site into a vibrant mixed-use creative and community precinct, with full completion expected by March 2024.

Following a letter from council acting chief executive Rebecca Stockfeld in April, outlining concerns about the lengthy delay and insufficient public communication, the council received a detailed response from Creative Victoria chief executive Claire Febey in June. In her letter, Febey confirmed that phase one, which includes the construction of a new gallery and events space, has been successfully completed.

Febey emphasized the complexity of the renovations, stating, “Given the site’s historic nature and the significant deterioration of the buildings, the works were complex.” The newly renovated bluestone building now serves as a multi-purpose gallery and events space, alongside upgrades to the old library, which has been repurposed for diverse community and creative activities.

Additionally, a new central entrance has been established to enhance visitor access and connectivity across the site, complemented by extensive landscaping that includes the planting of over 3,000 new plants.

Creative Victoria is currently finalizing the operational model for these spaces and is engaging with various stakeholders, including council staff, Working Heritage, Regional Arts Victoria, and community members to ensure a successful launch.

Febey assured, “Details regarding the opening of the bluestone building and surrounding outdoor areas, as well as phase two next steps will be shared with council and the community as soon as possible.”

In light of the recent updates, council representatives have met with Creative Victoria to discuss further confidential information about the project.

This redevelopment represents not only a significant investment in the community but also a revitalization of a historic site that holds emotional resonance for many residents. The community eagerly anticipates the next phases of this transformative project, which promises to enrich local culture and foster creative engagement.

As the situation develops, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements regarding the opening timelines and future phases of the project.
