opetaia-issues-challenge-ahead-of-title-defense-on-gold-coast

Jai Opetaia is preparing to defend his IBF and The Ring cruiserweight world titles against mandatory challenger Huseyin Cinkara on March 23, 2024, in what is being described as one of the most significant boxing events in Australia’s history. The Australian fighter, who boasts an undefeated record of 28-0, has issued a bold statement in response to rival Gilberto Ramirez, who has been attempting to sidestep a match with him.

Opetaia, now the only male boxing world champion from Australia, aims to unify his titles after previous attempts fell through. His upcoming fight against Cinkara, a 40-year-old veteran with a record of 23-0, is expected to showcase Opetaia’s skills, particularly as he prepares to fight in front of a home crowd at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on the Gold Coast.

Despite Cinkara’s impressive record, the matchup has raised eyebrows given that he has fought exclusively in Europe. Opetaia, who gained recognition as a 17-year-old competitor at the Olympics, stated, “He’s going to be in a lot of shock, to be honest.” He expressed confidence that Cinkara’s preparations may not be sufficient to meet the challenge he poses.

Opetaia Responds to Ramirez’s Comments

In the lead-up to the fight, Ramirez, the current WBO and WBA champion, made comments dismissing Opetaia’s achievements, claiming he was unaware of him and that Opetaia had “rocks for brains.” Despite these remarks, Ramirez has been in talks about a potential fight with Opetaia but has opted to defend his title against David Benavidez instead. Opetaia took the opportunity to respond, saying, “If I’m that easy of a fight, come and f***ing find out.”

The Australian’s previous encounters, particularly his two victories over former champion Mairis Briedis, have solidified his reputation. In their first bout, Opetaia battled through two broken bones in his jaw to claim victory and secure the belts. Their rematch was equally intense, with both fighters suffering injuries.

Opetaia’s success has led to speculation about a potential move to heavyweight. However, his immediate focus remains on Cinkara. “I have to conquer my division first,” he stated.

A Historic Fight Card for Australian Boxing

The upcoming fight night is part of a card that promoter Mick Francis has touted as the deepest in Australian boxing history. Despite the late withdrawal of Justis Huni due to a tragic circumstance involving his trainer’s death, the lineup remains impressive. Rising star Max McIntyre will face Jed Morris for the WBC Australasian super middleweight title. Additionally, veteran Paul Fleming is coming out of retirement to battle Jake Wyllie for the IBF super lightweight crown.

Dethroned bantamweight champion Jason Moloney will also be on the card, taking on Filipino Herlan Gomez for Australasia’s WBC strap. Heavyweight Teremoana Jnr and Gold Coast’s Ben Mahoney are also set to compete, ensuring a night packed with action for boxing fans.

Francis expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I can’t think of a better card, ever, in Australian boxing history.” The event will be broadcast on Stan Sport, marking the beginning of a new three-fight deal, further elevating the profile of Australian boxing on the international stage.

As Opetaia prepares for his title defense, all eyes will be on the Gold Coast to see if he can maintain his undefeated streak and silence his critics.
