UPDATE: In a significant move for Orange’s urban landscape, the Orange City Council has just approved two major development applications aimed at transforming the city’s CBD. The unanimous decision, reached on October 7, 2023, will see the former Caltex fuel depot at 184 Byng Street developed into 11 attached homes and a 115-place childcare centre, marking a pivotal step in revitalizing the area.
The plans for this site include two-storey townhouses featuring a mix of three and two-bedroom configurations. Council member Cr David Mallard expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is a great example of cleaning up a former industrial site and now turning it into both residential and early childhood infrastructure which we need in the city.” He emphasized the importance of developing housing within the city limits before expanding outward.
The approved childcare centre will address the growing demand for early childhood education and care in the region, adding crucial infrastructure for families. The need for such facilities has become increasingly urgent as the population of Orange continues to rise.
The city is also making strides with the Redmond Place Precinct, a major housing project that was discussed in a council meeting on July 1, 2023. Officials announced that the Draft Redmond Place Precinct Development Control Plan (Draft DCP) is now open for public exhibition. During the review period, community feedback underscored a strong preference for all-electric and gas-free homes, with several residents advocating for a complete ban on fossil fuels in future developments.
One resident remarked, “The age of fossil fuels is quickly coming to an end,” urging the council to ensure that new constructions are gas-free to avoid future conflicts with developers and residents. Council staff have noted that the use of gas is not being proposed in the Redmond Place development, and they are currently assessing the potential for future developments to adhere to these environmentally-friendly standards.
In another development, Colemans Equipment received approval to expand its operations by establishing a vehicle sales and hire premises at 25 Colliers Avenue. This new site will function as a hub for industrial activities, including the display and rental of heavy machinery for civil construction and mining, further boosting the local economy.
These developments reflect a broader trend towards sustainable urban growth in Orange, aligning with community desires for enhanced living conditions and environmentally-conscious infrastructure. The council has shown commitment to addressing these needs, ensuring that future projects reflect the city’s evolving demographic and environmental landscape.
As these projects move forward, residents and stakeholders will be watching closely for updates and further community engagement opportunities. The city is poised for significant change, and the implications for housing, childcare, and local business are profound.
Stay tuned for more updates as these developments unfold.
