URGENT UPDATE: Three councillors from Orange are mobilizing to reverse a controversial decision that restricts their capacity to attend rate-payer-funded events outside the city. During the council meeting on October 7, 2023, a motion introduced by Cr Jamie Stedman proposed that no more than half of the sitting councillors can attend any external event funded by the council.

The motion aims to ensure fair distribution of opportunities among councillors, prioritizing those who have not yet attended a ticketed event this calendar year. “I think that any more than half of the sitting councillors attending an event doesn’t really achieve anything,” said Cr Stedman, emphasizing fiscal responsibility.

However, the decision sparked immediate backlash. Deputy Mayor Tammy Greenhalgh and fellow councillors Kevin Duffy, David Mallard, and Jeff Whitton expressed concerns that this arbitrary cap would hinder their ability to learn, advocate, and network effectively. “We’re trusted adults that are capable of managing our own professional development and travel budgets,” Cr Greenhalgh stated.

During the previous financial year, Cr Greenhalgh topped the list with expenses of $9,138 for attending various conferences, closely followed by Cr Duffy with $5,060. Despite opposition, the motion passed narrowly with a vote of six to five.

Those who supported the motion included Cr Stedman, Cr Kinghorne, Cr Mileto, Cr Ruddy, Cr McDonell, and Cr Power. Conversely, Cr Judge, Cr Duffy, Cr Greenhalgh, Cr Whitton, and Cr Mallard opposed it.

In a significant move, the topic is set to return to the council on October 21, 2023, after Cr Duffy, Cr Greenhalgh, and Cr Judge filed a notice of rescission in an effort to overturn the initial decision. The council’s actions could have lasting implications on how councillors engage with external events and manage their professional growth.

As this situation unfolds, residents of Orange are encouraged to stay informed about the discussions that could reshape the council’s approach to event attendance. The latest developments are sure to spark debate about fiscal responsibility and the importance of networking for elected officials.

Stay tuned for updates on this pressing issue as the council reconvenes later this month.
