UPDATE: The Parkes sporting community is in mourning following the passing of rugby league icon Laurie “Darby” Wakefield. Wakefield, who was 77 years old, died on December 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the local and state sports circles.

Wakefield, a renowned all-rounder from Hillcrest Avenue, was celebrated not only for his impressive rugby league career but also for his contributions to hockey. The NSW Rugby League expressed their sorrow, highlighting the loss felt across the community. “Laurie was true blue,” they stated in an official release.

Wakefield’s journey began when he was signed by the Parramatta Eels at the age of 22, after showcasing his talent with the Parkes Spacemen. Known for his agility and heart, he played as a fullback, making his mark in the 1970 series against Queensland. He notably participated in a nail-biting match where NSW narrowly lost 16-15, and later contributed to a victory in the second match.

“He was a tough player, small in stature but big on heart,” said NSWRL director Bob Walsh. “He played for NSW, played for Country, and represented at hockey as well. He was well-respected and returned to help out at Parkes once he finished playing.”

The Parkes Spacemen paid tribute on their social media, stating, “Laurie was a local legend who played for NSW firsts, NSW Country firsts, Parramatta Eels, and Parkes Spacemen. Our thoughts are with his wife Dawn and their family.” They reflected on a recent Old Boys day in August where Laurie proudly wore the Spacemen colors.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Wakefield’s life at a funeral service on Tuesday, December 30, at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Parkes. Following the service, he will be interred at the lawn portion of the Parkes Cemetery.

This loss is felt deeply not only for his sporting achievements but for the community spirit he embodied. As tributes pour in, it is clear that Laurie Wakefield’s impact will be remembered for generations to come.
