UPDATE: Perth Glory midfielder Callum Timmins has thrown his full support behind interim coach Adam Griffiths as the team gears up for a crucial match against the Newcastle Jets on November 26, 2023. With the squad desperately seeking their first win of the season, Timmins believes Griffiths’ fresh approach could turn the tide.
The Glory are heading to the Hunter Valley this Sunday, aiming to secure their first three points of the season. After a rocky start under sacked coach David Zdrilic, the team is eager to rewrite their narrative and avoid a third consecutive last-place finish. Timmins expressed confidence in Griffiths, stating the squad has responded positively to the increased intensity during training.
“Griff’s certainly come straight in and has really upped the intensity,” Timmins said. “We were doing a lot of work during our bye week.” Under Griffiths, Perth’s possession rate has surged to 56.56%, a stark contrast to the 34.65% average under Zdrilic.
Timmins emphasized the importance of holding possession, stating, “As a player, you always like to have the ball a bit more… it’s obviously a lot more enjoyable.” But the next step is converting that possession into goals. Currently, Perth has not found the back of the net under Griffiths, ranking 10th for total shots and equal last for goals scored.
“We haven’t been ruthless enough in front of goal,” Timmins admitted. “We’ve had our chances, but we need to take them.” He believes that once the forwards start scoring, the team will gain the momentum they desperately need.
Timmins, now in his third stint with his hometown club, conveyed the urgency felt within the squad. “Everyone wants to be winning. It’s frustrating for us, as well,” he stated. The emotional weight of representing a club that he and his family support adds an extra layer of motivation for Timmins.
“I could have gone to any other club. Winning here would mean so much more to me,” he said passionately. “The lads from interstate and overseas are also so hungry to win and bring success to this club.”
As the countdown to Sunday’s pivotal match begins, all eyes are on Perth Glory to see if they can finally break their winless streak and prove their determination to rise in the league standings. Fans eagerly await whether Griffiths’ strategies will translate into the long-awaited victory that the club so desperately craves.
