UPDATE: Perth public transport users are set to embrace a groundbreaking payment option as the Cook Government confirms the tap’n’go system is on track for deployment by December 2023. The highly anticipated upgrade to Transperth’s SmartRider system is moving forward, with a new trial set to launch on buses, trains, and ferries Monday.
This 150-passenger trial marks the second phase of testing, following an initial successful run where 50 passengers utilized debit or credit cards, smartphone digital wallets, and smart watches to tag on and off ferries. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “With the success of early testing on the ferry network, we’re now ready to expand pilot testing to both buses and trains for the first time, which is a major milestone for the project.”
The rollout, initially estimated at $58 million, has now increased to $68 million due to unforeseen disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite these challenges, officials remain optimistic about the full rollout and are closely monitoring the trial’s progress across all public transport modes.
In addition to the tap’n’go system, changes to parking payment at train stations are also underway, allowing passengers to pay by card. This phased rollout will begin with the Mandurah Line, impacting around 100 machines across the network, supplementing the existing 4,000 SmartRider validators.
This development is crucial for Perth commuters seeking a more streamlined travel experience. With the tap’n’go system, users will enjoy enhanced convenience and efficiency, making it easier than ever to access public transport throughout the city.
As the trial progresses, all eyes will be on the Cook Government and Transperth to ensure a smooth transition for the entire community before the year’s end. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and share your thoughts on how the tap’n’go system will impact your daily commute!
