UPDATE: Local racing star Pony Soprano is set to make a highly anticipated comeback at Port Macquarie on Monday, just 44 days after a devastating fall at Rosehill. The four-year-old gelding, trained by Robert Agnew, aims to reclaim his position in the spotlight following his recovery from multiple injuries sustained during a Class 2 Highway race on July 15, 2023.
In that fateful race, Pony Soprano was brought down after being interfered with by another horse around the 800m mark. The incident left jockey Anna Roper sidelined for the day, while Pony Soprano suffered abrasions and lacerations. Following a period of rest and rehabilitation, he returned to the track victorious in a barrier trial, winning by more than four lengths in mid-August.
The racing community is buzzing as Pony Soprano, now the $1.70 favorite, prepares for his first race back in a Class 3 Handicap over 1200m. This race marks the start of the spring racing season, and expectations are high for his performance.
Roper, who has also bounced back quickly from her injuries, recently achieved two wins in metropolitan races, including an impressive victory aboard Sunshine Law on Saturday. Her recovery and continued success add an emotional layer to Pony Soprano’s return.
Despite the odds favoring Pony Soprano, two challengers are eyeing an upset. Nyali Sands, a resilient mare sired by Group 1 winner Casino Prince, is currently priced at $11 after a solid performance at Muswellbrook. Additionally, Orsum, a five-year-old gelding from the local Cassandra Schmidt stable, is positioned at $8.50 and is expected to peak in performance as he approaches his fourth race.
Weather conditions are favorable, with the track rated as a soft 5 but likely to improve to a good 4 by race time, thanks to sunny weather leading up to the event.
As anticipation builds for Pony Soprano’s return, the racing world watches closely. Will he bounce back to form, or will one of the underdogs steal the show? All eyes will be on Port Macquarie as this thrilling comeback unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates!
