UPDATE: In a bold move, climate action group Rising Tide has officially requested the Newcastle Council to relocate its upcoming protestival from Richardson Park back to Foreshore Park. Rising Tide organizer Alexa Stuart emphasized the importance of this change, stating, “After carefully considering the safety concerns raised by NSW Police, we feel that Foreshore Park would mitigate many concerns.” The organization argues that the previous venue was not only successful but also centralizes activities, enhancing traffic management, parking, and pedestrian safety.
This decision follows the release of the City of Newcastle’s Public Notice Report, revealing that out of 1,855 public submissions, a staggering 86% support the protestival. The event promises to attract many attendees, echoing the atmosphere of the 2024 festival, which was characterized by a festive and family-friendly environment, according to the Newcastle East Residents Group (NERG).
Stuart expressed hope that the council will heed the community’s wishes, urging them to support the application for the 2025 People’s Blockade. “We have been working cooperatively with council staff for months. We believe this amendment is vital for a successful event,” she stated.
Despite widespread backing, concerns have escalated from industry and business leaders regarding potential disruptions. Last year’s protest saw significant tensions, culminating in 170 arrests as activists clashed with police.
