UPDATE: In a nail-biting conclusion to the Basketball Victoria Country Basketball League north-west men’s grand final, the Macedon Ranges Rockies fell short against the Castlemaine Cannons, with a final score of 90-81 on July 15, 2023. Despite trailing by over 20 points in the third quarter, the Rockies fought back fiercely, nearly pulling off a stunning upset.

The Cannons, aiming for a perfect season, were able to withstand the Rockies’ late charge. With just under three minutes left, the Rockies closed the gap to a mere three points, but Castlemaine managed to regroup and secure the victory.

Rockies coach Michael Ryan expressed pride in his team’s resilience. “We were rapt to still be competitive in the final quarter,” he stated. “At three-quarter time, the guys still thought we could win the game. I’m really proud, but it hurts.”

The Rockies faced significant challenges, entering the game without key players Lucas Carnell and Lucas Impey. The absence of these players, alongside an early exit of Saxon Royal due to a kidney injury, forced the team to adapt quickly against a larger Cannons side.

Ryan acknowledged the impact of the Cannons’ size, saying, “We knew it would be a challenge.” However, Finn McGinity, a talented 17-year-old, provided a much-needed spark for the Rockies during critical moments. Unfortunately, foul trouble for McGinity and teammate Matthew Quinn hindered their effectiveness.

The pivotal third quarter proved to be the Rockies’ downfall, where they lost 28-15. “We could have adjusted earlier; it wasn’t our best quarter,” Ryan reflected, highlighting the importance of adaptability in high-pressure situations.

Guards Jacob Poyser and Jack Dohmen-Jolly were instrumental in the comeback, scoring 20 and 21 points respectively. Their efforts, alongside strong community support, created a vibrant atmosphere at the game.

Despite the loss, Ryan emphasized the significance of the season. “Eight of the players were in their original side five seasons ago,” he noted. “It’s Tom Scott’s last game in the CBL, and we talked about hanging a banner in the stadium at some point. I’m glad they got to be part of that.”

Looking ahead, Ryan is optimistic about the upcoming season, stating the team is eager to compete again. Meanwhile, Lucas Impey earned a spot in the north-west all-star five team, underscoring the talent present in the Rockies squad.

The Rockies’ journey in this season has captured the hearts of their supporters, and although they fell short in the grand final, the team’s spirit and determination leave fans hopeful for future success.
