UPDATE: The Romsey Redbacks are gearing up for a competitive season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association, leveraging their experience to regain championship glory. Following a strong track record that includes a drought-breaking McIntyre Cup premiership and consistent playoff appearances, the Redbacks are determined to capitalize on their seasoned roster.
Captain-coach Ben Way expressed confidence in the team’s stability, stating, “We’re just trying to get 5 per cent better here and there, and hopefully be there at the end of the season.” With most players aged between 25 and 30, Way believes they are at a prime age for peak performance, allowing them to navigate critical moments more effectively.
Last season, the Redbacks faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against the eventual champions, Gisborne, but are set to make a strong comeback. Key players like Chris Burkett (534 runs at 41.08) and Tyler Stevenson (439 runs at 33.77 and 34 wickets at 19.68) are expected to lead the charge again this summer.
Despite their solid lineup, competition for first XI spots is anticipated. “Our seconds have been in the last three grand finals,” Way noted, highlighting the depth within the club. This development is crucial as the Redbacks aim to maintain their competitive edge against formidable rivals like Woodend and Gisborne, who have dominated the past two seasons.
The Redbacks kicked off their campaign with a victory against Sunbury United, where Stevenson showcased his batting prowess with a century. Upcoming matches against Gisborne, Macedon, and Woodend will test their early-season momentum. “If we can start well, we’ll hopefully be setting ourselves up for a good season,” Way stated.
In a challenging opener, the Redbacks faced a setback against Gisborne, conceding 286 runs while only managing to score 186. This defeat underscores the urgency for improvement as they progress through the season.
As the Redbacks strive for excellence, fans are eager to see if their experience will translate into success on the field. With the season just underway, all eyes are on Romsey to see if they can reclaim their status as a championship contender.
