romsey-triumphs-in-rain-shortened-cricket-matches-rupo-settles-for-draw

UPDATE: In a dramatic turn of events on October 7, 2023, Romsey emerged victorious in the rain-affected matches of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association, while Rupertswood fell short, ending in a draw.

Heavy rains disrupted the cricket schedule once again, limiting play to just two games in the McIntyre Cup. After last week’s matches were largely washed out, this week saw only Romsey capitalize on the conditions. The Redbacks needed just 29 runs for first innings points against Broadford and successfully chased the target before the weather interrupted play. Romsey finished with a solid 5-213, with standout performances from Thomas Boyer, who scored 60, and Jed Richardson, who added 59. This victory places Romsey in third position after seven rounds of the tournament.

In contrast, Rupertswood faced Macedon at Tony Clarke Oval, resuming their innings at 5-78. Despite their efforts, Rupo was bowled out for 155 in the 76th over, with both Matthew Twentyman and Daniel Kavanagh top-scoring at 29 runs each. The Cats struggled to build momentum, collapsing to 8-90 in their innings, unable to secure the two wickets needed for a win. Rupertswood’s Rhys Berry took an impressive six wickets, but the match concluded in a draw, leaving both teams with mixed emotions.

Meanwhile, the matches between Woodend and Gisborne, along with Sunbury United and Wallan, were abandoned due to the persistent rain.

In the Johnstone Shield, Diggers Rest Bulla and East Sunbury celebrated victories. The Burras resumed their match against Harkness in a commanding position, having entered day two at 1-23 in reply to Harkness’s 96. Despite the rain, the Burras pressed on, declaring at 5-200 with Kael Beaumont leading the charge, scoring 62. Harkness managed to avoid an outright loss, finishing their second innings at 5-100, thanks to captain Simarjeet Singh’s unbeaten 36.

East Sunbury also secured a crucial win against Kilmore, chasing down a target of 190. Despite a delayed start, the Thunder showcased their best batting performance this season, concluding at 6-200. Captain Justin Nelson led the way with 55 runs, supported by Alec Boorsma and Evan Wilkins, who remained not out with 33 and 35, respectively.

Eastern Hill had already claimed first innings points against Lancefield but fell short of an outright victory. In contrast, the match between Sunbury Kangaroos and Eynesbury witnessed no action.

As rain continues to affect the cricket season, all eyes will be on the upcoming fixtures to see how teams adapt to the challenging weather conditions. Fans are eager for more thrilling action in the weeks ahead.
