UPDATE: The highly anticipated Rugby 7s tournament kicks off in Cairns, Queensland, this weekend, October 12-13, 2025, with a record-breaking 36 teams participating. This year’s event, now in its fourth year, is expected to attract close to 2,000 visitors and generate approximately $3.6 million in local spending.
Officials confirm that the tournament, hosted by the Fiji Community Association FNQ (FCAFNQ), will showcase fierce competition on the field and a vibrant celebration of Pacific culture off it. Richard Barker, CEO of Cairns Airport, emphasized the role of Fiji Airways in enhancing accessibility, stating, “Direct flights from Fiji have made it easier for teams and supporters from Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji to travel directly to the Far North.”
The event promises more than just rugby; it is set to create a festival atmosphere that celebrates sport, culture, and community, according to Ili Cava, president of FCAFNQ. “This partnership gives us the opportunity to attract more international sides,” Cava stated. “It also promotes Cairns ahead of the 2032 Olympics as a premier destination for visitors and athletes alike.”
In addition to the men’s competition, the women’s tournament is expanding, with teams traveling from as far as Townsville and Western Australia. Charlyn Harman, a player for Barron Bullettes, remarked on the excitement surrounding the growth of women’s rugby. “It’s about reconnecting with other teams and bringing that free-spirited, freestyle rugby we play back home,” she said.
With a total prize pool of $40,000, the stakes are high, and anticipation is building. The Cairns community has embraced this event, which serves as a critical opportunity for connection and culture following the challenges of the pandemic.
Expect tropical vibes and a celebration of the spirit of Far North Queensland as the tournament unfolds. Stay tuned for updates as this thrilling weekend of rugby action begins!
